skills, spearheading various initiatives that have transformed the organization.
On behalf of DigitalCIO , Gargi Chakravorty spoke to him where he elaborates how MS Agarwal expanded their journey and built on three core principles: quality, innovation, and sustainability. We invested heavily in modernizing our facilities, adopting state-of-the-art technologies to improve production efficiency while maintaining stringent quality standards.
DigitalCIO: MS Agarwal is into the steel business. Over the years, how do you see the steel industry in India evolving in terms of innovation and expansion?
The Indian steel industry has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, driven by rising infrastructure demands, rapid urbanization, and industrial expansion. Modernization is at the heart of this evolution, with companies increasingly adopting energy-efficient technologies such as Electric Arc Furnaces, automation, and AI-driven processes to enhance productivity and reduce costs. Sustainability has become a key priority, with many steelmakers integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind into their operations to reduce their carbon footprint.
The government’s National Steel Policy 2017, which aims to increase production capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030, has further accelerated this growth. Alongside this, India is focusing on reducing import dependency by ramping up domestic production of high-grade specialty steels. As the second-largest steel producer globally, India is now positioned for sustained innovation, expansion, and increased competitiveness on the world stage.
DigitalCIO: How has MS Agarwal evolved into one of the best steel-producing units?
At MS Agarwal, our journey has been built on three core principles: quality, innovation, and sustainability. We invested heavily in modernizing our facilities, adopting state-of-the-art technologies to improve production efficiency while maintaining stringent quality standards. Over the years, we’ve introduced lean manufacturing practices, Kaizen for continuous improvement, and advanced quality control systems like 5S and Six Sigma. This has helped us meet the evolving needs of our customers and position ourselves as a reliable supplier of high-quality steel. Additionally, our focus on sustainable production through electric arc furnaces and green energy initiatives has set us apart in the industry.
DigitalCIO: What kind of new-age technology have you introduced in your plants to maximize production and earn profitable revenue?
We have integrated several new-age technologies into our production facilities to maximize efficiency and drive profitability. A key innovation is the adoption of Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), which enhances steel quality while significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally, we’ve implemented automation and AI-powered systems to optimize production processes, enabling us to increase output and minimize waste.
Our use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Human Resource Management Systems (HRMS) further streamlines operations, fostering transparency and enhancing workplace culture. These digital solutions not only improve overall operational efficiency but also contribute to a sustainable manufacturing approach, allowing us to reduce costs while increasing profitability
DigitalCIO: As a leader, what is your view about the new age of digital technologies, and how will the manufacturing industry benefit? Can you share success stories and case studies to emphasize this point?
Digital technologies are transforming the manufacturing sector in unprecedented ways. The use of AI, IoT, and data analytics in steel manufacturing has enhanced our ability to monitor and optimize production in real time. MSAF is strategically managing new technologies and workforce expansion with careful planning and phased implementation. Cross-functional teams ensure smooth transitions, while detailed integration plans cover timelines, resources, and milestones. New technologies are introduced gradually to minimize disruption, with comprehensive training programs in place for employees.
The company uses structured change management, clear communication, and feedback mechanisms to ease transitions. For workforce expansion, MSAF focuses on strategic recruitment, onboarding, and talent development, supported by optimized workflows and new management systems. Continuous monitoring and feedback ensure adaptability and success in achieving company goals.
DigitalCIO: What is your definition of leadership, and how have you navigated the path of leadership in adverse situations? What is your mantra of leadership?
To me, leadership is about vision, empathy, and resilience. It’s the ability to inspire and guide people towards a shared goal, especially in challenging times. I believe a leader should empower their team, encourage open communication, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. In difficult situations, I focus on being adaptable and transparent with my team, ensuring that challenges are tackled collectively. My mantra is simple: Lead by example, stay calm under pressure, and always put people first. This approach has allowed us to navigate crises, including market downturns and operational challenges, while keeping the team motivated and aligned.
DigitalCIO: What kind of initiatives have you taken recently that will foster growth and innovation?
MSAF’s growth reflects our commitment to long-term value, strategic relationships, and ambitious goals. In the short term, we aim to exceed industry growth rates and drive innovation. Looking ahead, our plans include expanding into Europe and the UK, and leading in the “Green Steel” sector, envisioning MSAF as a global leader in financial success and sustainability.
Overcoming complacency and resistance to change has been a significant challenge. In 2012, MSAF underwent a cultural transformation highlighted by a company-wide survey, leading to revamped Purpose, Vision, Mission, and Values (PVMV), improved talent management, and setting new industry benchmarks for employee well-being.
This transformation spurred substantial growth and earned us our first “Great Place to Work” certification, validating the success of our strategic changes. This was further supported by several transformative initiatives including process streamlining, digitalisation and automation, leadership development initiatives, employer branding initiatives, enhanced internal/external communication etc.
DigitalCIO: What kind of industries do you cater to?
Our steel products serve a diverse range of industries, including construction, infrastructure, automotive, and industrial machinery. We supply high-quality TMT bars under our MS Life and AFStar brands, which are highly sought after in the construction sector for their durability and strength.
Additionally, we are committed to sourcing 100% of our power from renewable sources, investing in wind and solar projects. These efforts reflect our commitment to innovation, market expansion, and sustainability.
DigitalCIO: Are you into exports also, given the great demand for steel across the world?
Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to expand our presence in Europe and the UK while establishing ourselves as a leader in the “Green Steel” sector. Our vision for MSAF is to not only achieve financial success but also to set industry standards in sustainability. By focusing on innovative, eco-friendly production methods, we aim to meet the growing global demand for high-quality steel while minimizing our environmental impact. This dual focus on profitability and sustainability will position MSAF as a global leader in the steel industry, driving growth and positive change in the market.
DigitalCIO: With your expertise, what would you suggest to new-age entrepreneurs as we witness startups booming in India?
My advice to new-age entrepreneurs is simple: Focus on creating value. Whether you are in manufacturing, tech, or any other industry, understanding your customers’ needs and delivering exceptional value is key. Secondly, embrace innovation. Technology is moving fast, and being adaptable to new tools, processes, and digital solutions can provide you with a competitive edge. Lastly, build a strong team. Surround yourself with people who share your vision, and invest in their development. Success is a team effort, and having the right people with you on the journey is crucial for sustained growth.
