ToneTag today announced an investment from Qualcomm Ventures , the investment arm of Qualcomm Incorporated, a global leader in wireless and edge computing technologies. ToneTag aims to enable the next generation of edge AI experiences and payment capabilities across a wide range of connected devices.

A key objective for ToneTag will be the development of what could become one of the world’s first Edge AI-powered payment-capable modules designed and engineered in India, for global deployment.

By leveraging high-performance edge processing with real-time contextual awareness built on its innovative proximity protocol, ToneTag aims to transform everyday devices into intelligent, conversational, and payment-capable ecosystems. Applications span legacy payment systems, smart TVs, smartphones, wearables including smartwatches and smart glasses, and emerging IoT form factors, paving the way for seamless, next-generation experiences.

ToneTag is aligned with Qualcomm’s mission of enabling intelligence, context, and trust to operate locally on devices, rather than relying on cloud-heavy architectures. This approach significantly improves latency, resilience, privacy, and accessibility especially in high-volume, real-world environments such as payments, identity verification, and device-to-device interactions.

“The real differentiation in computing is happening at the edge,” said Kumar Abhishek, Founder and CEO, ToneTag. “With our proximity context protocol, we are laying the foundation for a new class of intelligent, payment-ready edge devices that can scale globally.”

Rama Bethmangalkar, Sr. Director, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and Managing Director at Qualcomm Ventures India, added: “We’re proud to be part of ToneTag’s pioneering journey in digital payments, now foraying into the age of AI. ToneTag’s innovation combines powerful on-device AI with contextual intelligence, unlocking secure real-time payments across industries and devices.”

Qualcomm Ventures’ investment reinforces India’s growing role as a global hub for deep-tech innovation, particularly in areas spanning digital payments, edge AI, and device-native intelligence.

ToneTag’s payment protocol is live across millions of touchpoints and processes over 25 million transactions daily, representing more than USD 3 billion in monthly transaction value. The company’s technology is protected by patents across multiple global jurisdictions and is designed to work with existing hardware such as speakers and microphones already embedded in devices.
