TCS will help international wholesaler METRO simplify its technology environment, reduce operational complexity and transition from country-specific systems to a more centrally governed operating model

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been selected as a strategic partner by international wholesaler METRO AG, to support the next phase of its international strategy by harmonising its application landscape, simplifying operations, and enabling scalable growth.

As part of this partnership, TCS will help METRO transition from a highly localised, country-specific IT application landscape to a centralised technology environment by leveraging AI-based solutions. This transformation is designed to reduce complexity, streamline operations, and enable greater agility across the company’s major markets in Europe and Asia.

METRO has built a strong international footprint with empowered local operations and is now evolving towards a more globally aligned and centrally driven technology landscape to support greater scale, consistency, and innovation. Through this engagement, TCS will help METRO in consolidating applications and technology operations across key markets, enabling the organisation to free up resources and focus more effectively on customer growth, innovation, and value creation.

The partnership goes beyond technology harmonization and is a key component of METRO’s broader business evolution. It additionally involves significant change management efforts to support the shift towards a more unified operating approach across the organisation.

Dr. Khaled Bagban, Chief Information Officer, METRO AG, said, “To advance our wholesale business, we need an IT landscape that combines strong local relevance with clear central steering. For METRO, this means building systems that are measurable in their impact, scalable across markets, and capable of turning complexity into competitive strength. This partnership comes with high expectations: we need a partner who not only understands technology, but also how to translate it into tangible business value for our customers and our operations.”

Bhuwan Agrawal, Head TCS Central Europe, said, “We are excited to begin this partnership with METRO. This collaboration represents a significant opportunity to accelerate METRO’s strategy. By bringing our collective experience in managing complex, large-scale transformations and leveraging AI-led capabilities, we look forward to partnering closely with METRO to support its future growth ambitions.”

Abhijit Niyogi, VP and Business Unit Head, Retail – UK, EMEA and India, TCS, said, “This engagement reflects an important shift towards simpler and more effective ways of operating at scale. We are proud to partner with METRO on this journey and support its efforts to create long-term value through greater consistency, efficiency, and innovation.”

TCS possesses extensive experience in delivering complex, large-scale, multi-country transformation programs for global enterprises. Through this strategic engagement, TCS reinforces its role as a trusted partner for global enterprises undergoing complex business transformations. For METRO AG, TCS will provide support in building a future-ready, flexible, and efficient IT-operating model, better positioned to support future growth, innovation, and evolving customer needs.

TCS has a long-standing commitment to serving as a trusted IT partner for European enterprises, with a presence in the region for over 45 years and close to 15,000 employees. In Germany, it has been operating since 1991, maintaining a strong local presence with multiple offices across the country. Independent studies consistently rank TCS among the IT service providers with the highest customer satisfaction in Germany. The company is also recognized as a Top Employer.
