Oracle admits cloud compromised, customer data stolen

After earlier denials Oracle has admitted that its public cloud was in fact compromised and customer data stolen. This happened after a cybercriminal claimed in March to have gained access to login servers and stolen approximately six million records, including sensitive data.

The Register reports, several experts had confirmed the break-in in Oracle’s Cloud Classic product, likely through an unpatched vulnerability in Oracle Access Manager (CVE-2021-35587 ).

According to Bloomberg, two customers have now confirmed that Oracle informally notified them about the data theft and that the company has hired CrowdStrike to investigate the matter.

The FBI is also said to have launched an investigation. While Oracle told some customers that the data was eight years old, others claim that more recent data was also compromised.

Oracle is already facing charges in Texas over the incident. The recent admission is separate from an alleged attack on Oracle Health, which the company has not yet commented on. There is speculation about possible fines under GDPR in Europe and HIPAA in the US for the late admission of the breach.
