Nvidia intends to release a modified version of its H20 artificial intelligence chip for China within two months, reported Reuters citing sources.
This will allow Nvidia to circumvent export restrictions recently imposed on the H20 chip by the United States.
Reuters sources say Nvidia has informed key Chinese clients of the plans.
The modified H20 chip is expected to be available in July 2025. Previously, the H20 was Nvidia’s most advanced AI chip available to buyers in China. It was banned from export to China since last month without an export license.
Nvidia has developed new technical specifications for the modified chip. In practice, these mean significant downgrades from the original H20. For example, the chip has less memory capacity.
However, customers may be able to adjust the module configuration to optimize the chip’s performance. Nvidia declined to respond to the reports to Reuters.
