A new malware campaign has been discovered specifically aimed at stealing information related to online meetings via platforms such as Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom. Data collected includes participant names, job descriptions, profile pictures, and company relationships.

Koi Security is warning of this. The malware campaign is attributed to a Chinese attacker named DarkSpectre. Research shows that the group has been active for seven years. DarkSpectre is linked to three large-scale malware campaigns aimed at stealing corporate data.

Extensions

The malware is spread through web browser extensions, eighteen of which have been discovered. The malware is disguised as tools that support users during meetings, for example, by capturing video footage or displaying a timer. The extensions have been downloaded over 2.2 million times. The extensions scrape information from online meetings, which is then sent to the attackers in real time. The goal appears to be corporate espionage and social engineering. In total, the extensions request access to more than 28 video conferencing platforms.
