The National Cybersecurity Strategy 2020 is likely to come up soon after the Cabinet approval to make India’s Cyberspace safe, secure and resilient, a top official Monday said.
“We are sending a draft of the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2020 to a few ministries and then it will be put up to the Cabinet,” Lt. Gen Rajesh Pant, the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) chief said, and added that The vision includes– safe, secure, resilient and vibrant Cyberspace for India.
Pant took over from India’s first Cybersecurity chief Gulshan Rai in April last year.
On December 1, 2019, the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) had sought comments from stakeholders including academia to improve the national strategy, and has formed a task force.
“We are among the few countries that have come up with Cybersecurity policy in 2013 and conducted a gap analysis,” the top official said.
The comments were sought on securing national cyberspace, strengthen the structures, people, processes and capabilities, as well as synergise resources including cooperation and collaboration.
The draft was put out for public comments until January 10, 2020 had received 300 comments from stakeholders, and is now being finalised.
“2020 is going to be the benchmark year as the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill 2019 is being debated by the expert committee of the Parliament,” Pant said.
The government, according to him, is also talking to companies like Mastercard for facial recognition, Iris-based identification and location for a more robust security roadmap. “Cyber-threat is there but there are people to tackle it,” he added.
